I was completely exhausted at the start of this weekend so I haven’t really done much [I did go to ikea which was fun] but I’ve got some rest so that’s good. I do have a lot of work to do over the next week so I need to get back to being productive pretty soon though. I hopefully have a shoot coming up with a family which could be pretty interesting, not really my style but it’ll be a good experience.
Tomorrow I’m going on a photo walk around Glasgow with Ellie and I’ll shoot another roll of film on my dad’s old Praktica which I’m really excited about. Might be heading to Edinburgh at some point this week with Haley which would be good, lots of opportunities to take photos.
I seem to be in a cycle at the moment of relaxing a lot and then exhausting myself running around too much. I don’t really want to continue that, I’d like to be a bit more balanced about things.
I’m getting really excited about the new Murakami novel, it’s only a week now. I’ve tried to not read too many plot summaries and stuff so I only know a very rough outline of it. I just can’t wait for 1000+ pages of Murakami to dive into.
That’s about all that’s going on at the moment, nothing too exciting I suppose but I feel good. I haven’t felt this consistently happy for a long time.
"just do it right / make it perfect and real"
Lets start with the fact that I last week I started talking to Ellie again after a couple of weeks of not chatting. It was good to see her again, I missed her a lot. We talk every day, it’s hard to go from that to nothing. I’m just really glad to have her around again, hopefully that’ll be the last time we stop talking. Some people just sort of pull you together and it’s not the same without them.
It’s been quite a quiet week really but I’ve been feeling fairly upbeat. I’ve been trying to keep a bit healthier which seems to be going well. Sadly my productivity isn’t quite what I’d like it to be, I’ll try to work on that over the next week or so. The weather has been good the last couple of days so if that keeps up I’ll try to go out a few days and take some photos. I’m also planning out a few projects for the next few weeks.
Got a few good things planned for this week so I’m in quite good spirits. I’d quite like to sit in the sun with a beer at the moment but sadly I have no beers or money with which to buy them so I think I’ll relax with a book instead.
There was more that I wanted to say in this but I’ve forgotten it so this’ll do for now.
Had a good night out last night with the girls I’ll be going to the Met with after the summer (Ellie, Alex and Clare who just made her tumblr last night). Went to Driftwood which is always good and had quite a lot to drink really. Took down the exhibition today so that’s everything finished and the summer can properly begin. I don’t think the weather is going to be good anytime soon so that’s probably going to hinder my shooting somewhat but I’ll try to work something out.
I was just trying some things out to see how they would work and got this photo, I kinda like it even if I’m not sure entirely why.
Also came home to this rather beautiful new Radiohead song.
Today I went into Glasgow to shoot the last corporate image at the Glasgow Print Studio, that went alright. After that I met up with Ellie, had a wander around town then went for a frappuccino and headed to Byres Road for more wandering and browsing. We saw a couple of cats in Relics this time; very cute cats.
Stuff I bought;
Isaac Asimov - Foundation’s Edge £1
Graham Greene - The Tenth Man £5
Shepherd Mead - The Big Ball of Wax £1
John Updike - The Women Who Got Away £2
The other books are two old photography related books I picked up in Relics a little while ago; one was written in 1946 and is called My Way with the Miniature and is about 35mm photography.
The pocket watch was given to me by Pierre as he was getting rid of some of his stuff. It’s pretty cool, I need to check if it works.
About a week ago I finished reading this. First of all I need to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, at no point did I feel like it dragged too much or lost it’s way which is quite something for a novel whose subject matter isn’t exactly the most immediately gripping. It’s unflinchingly well written and the language, though sometimes overly dense when conveying simple sentiments is often very beautiful. I don’t think I ever made much of a personal connection with any of the characters, I felt a little distant from them, but I don’t think that had much effect on my enjoyment of the book as a whole.
The key things for me about the novel and by far the most successful aspect in my opinion was Austen’s handling of more complex emotional situations. Her understanding and portrayal of the confusion that multiple emotions can create was something that I found very honest and real and ultimately something quite beautiful to see written down and expressed so well.
Just a couple of days ago I then watched the 2005 film version with Ellie. A few elements of the novel had been changed and adapted to make it more suitable for a movie but I thought the changes were done well. I think seeing the movie made it easier to connect to the characters which coupled with reading the book made it really rather good. I think visually it was a beautiful movie too and that really helped place the characters into the scenes you created in your mind with the book.
I’m glad I’ve read it and I don’t think it was quite what I was expecting, I think every good book gives you something to think about and a different perspective on things and I definitely got that in this case.
A bit of a recap.
On Thursday I met Ellie in the morning to give her a bulb for the studio lights and we sat in the sun for a while until Grant met us and we headed to the studio while Ellie went home to do some shoots of her own. Grant's shoot went fairly smoothly; Haley turned up after a while just to hang out and keep us company and Jamie showed up for his shoot at about half 4. His part of the shoot went by fairly quickly which was good because it was a really nice day outside and I didn’t want to miss it all. I’m happy with the results of both shoots though.
After the studio we picked up some beer and Haley gave us all a lift home and Grant came to my house to sit in the sun and drink beer; Jamie stayed for a couple too but had to head home to get some work done. Was a nice night just relaxing and chatting.
Friday I woke up nice and early, took my time easing into the day and getting ready. At about 1, Andrew and Sam picked me up and we went to Dalmuir park to sit and enjoy the sun. Ellie joined us after a while and it was rather nice until the weather turned a little and ultimately we had to venture inside and rethink our plans. After some deliberation we decided upon Chinese food followed by going to see Thor in the cinema. The chinese food was awesome but I think everyone ate a little too much, leading to some slight feelings of queasiness. Thor was pretty good, thoroughly enjoyable film. It had Idris Elba in it so that sold it for me. After the film, Ellie just managed to catch her bus and Andrew and I got a train home.
Not long after I got home I discussed plans with Grant for going to the cinema that night which left me only about 20 minutes at home, a little less than I would have liked but not a big problem. So we got the train to Scott's and he drove us to the GFT to see Aliens which was wonderful; I haven't seen it in a long time and to see it in the cinema in very high quality was great, I'm astounded by how good a film it is, still the definitive movie in it's genre.
So that brings us pretty much to now. Tomorrow I’m going to a barbecue which should be fun, not been to one in ages. Sunday is my niece’s birthday, she’ll be turning two. I think we’re all going out to dinner for it.
macro. (by melancholyellie)
alldaynow was kind enough to indulge me in my macro fascination. his eyes are pretty wonderful too.
I’m usually quite self conscious about my eyes but I really like this photo, it makes me feel better about them. Ellie has been doing a fair bit of macro stuff lately and it’s all wonderful. I want to thank her for making me think differently about a part of myself I’ve never been very fond of.
i haven’t done too much today at all really. walked home from andrew's at about 11. a postcard I bought online came today so that was good, I had a good look at it, quite a few little interesting things so i'm pleased. watched some stuff on iplayer then got a few hours extra sleep cos i've been a little bit behind on that lately. woke up, had some food and watched more stuff online. then ellie let me know about a Rankin documentary about celebrity photography on bbc so i watched that, really interesting stuff.
last night was good, just had a nice cosy night in andrew's, quite a few laughs, some good music and good chat. watched coraline later on which was better than I expected to be honest, it also some rather additional audio thanks to ellie and andrew; sam was pretty much sound asleep by this point. good night indeed.
i’m feeling rather enthusiastic about college at the moment, things are a little more planned out thanks to eugene and i feel like i’ll get quite a lot done in the next week or so.
